This Month's Book: The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson

This book provides opportunities for conversations around tolerance and acceptance of others. It also makes us aware about the importance of creating a caring school climate where everyone feels they belong. The goal was to help the students embrace and nurture each individual for who they are and to practice inclusive behaviors to create a caring school climate.

This month's ABC book: "Simon's Hook" by Karen Burnett is a colorful story that compares teases to fishing hooks and tells the tale of how the fish learned not to bite.

Goals of lesson:

Help students feel empowered and in control of their responses to hurtful teases and put-downs.

 Have students learn and practice specific language and techniques to allow them to swim free.

Please ask your child about the 5 strategies that Simon's neighbor, Grandma Rose, offers to help Simon avoid taking the bait:

 Do little or nothing—don't react!

 Pretend to agree with the hook.

 Change the subject to distract the bully.

 Laugh at the hook and make a joke of it.

 Stay away from the hooks and swim in another part of the sea.

As caring adults in the lives of youth, we can help develop and nurture skills to navigate the rough patches in life. Our ultimate goal is for youth to be able to handle these bumps and ruts on their own!

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

This month's ABC book: "Have You Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud is about expressing daily kindness and appreciation to others.

Goals of lesson:

• Teach students the 3 laws of bucket filling:

o Be a bucket filler.

o Don't dip.

o Use your lid.

Empower students to intentionally fill their own buckets and the buckets of others with good feelings (warm fuzzies).

After your child has had the lesson in class, ask your child to tell you more about:

• Warm fuzzies-What are they?

• Bucket fillers-How can you fill your own bucket and the buckets of others?

• Bucket dippers-How can you keep a lid on your bucket and how can you help bucket dippers fill their bucket?
