Message from the Principal
This time of year, many families choose to take extended time away from school because of important functions or vacations. While we honor the time you spend with your family and know that children learn so much from travel, please know that teachers are not required to provide homework packets or makeup work while your child is away.
Our school year has a certain number of instructional days in it, and we use those days and our time in class wisely. There are specific times during the year when vacations are encouraged. We have a week off in November, two weeks in December, a week in February, and a week plus one day in March/April. Those are the times to schedule your vacations. When school is in session, it is not the right time for vacations. Again this year, we are hearing about family trips, an extra week or two before December break, or even extending the break into January.
When school is in session, your children are required to be in attendance. They need to be at school. According to California law, the parents or legal guardian of students between the ages of 6 and 18 are responsible for seeing to it that their students attend school until the student attains the age of 18 or graduates from high school. Students (ages 6-18) shall be punctual and regular in their class attendance.
Requesting homework ahead of time because a family has decided to go on vacation is unreasonable. If a child has had surgery, or is ill, of course we will make every effort to help and accommodate, but vacations, weddings, etc., are not such situations. Schedule your trips during times when school is not in session, and make certain your children are in school when we are in session. This is a serious issue as it not only affects the academic success of our children, but it is also outside of the rules. We are forced to mark the students with an unexcused absence which also means we will not receive funding from the State of California. This is how schools are funded in California. We cannot afford to have children miss school for such reasons.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about vacations and schoolwork.
Thank you for your support!
