Evergreen Board of Trustees Approves Delay of School Consolidation
Closure of third school delayed until end of 2021-22 school year

At their regular board meeting on November 12, The Evergreen Board of Trustees approved the delay of consolidating the third school as part of its fiscal stabilization plan approved in October 2019. In February 2020, the Board of Trustees approved the closure of two schools, Dove Hill and Laurelwood Elementary Schools, at the end of the 2019-20 school year, and one school at the end of the 2020-21 school year to address a $12 million financial shortfall that is the result of rising operating costs and declining enrollment.

Superintendent Dr. Emy Flores recommended the delay of the consolidation of the third school to the end of the 2021-22 school year due to the "tremendous sacrifices our families are already making during COVID-19 school closures." The district will provide opportunities for stakeholder input during the Fall 2021 school year in order to provide an opportunity for parents, staff, students, and community members to provide feedback throughout the school consolidation process.

This action does not have a negative impact on the district's fiscal stabilization goals or outcomes, and will still allow the district to continue to achieve stability with its budget.

Evergreen Board of Trustees to Hold a Study Session (Special Board Meeting) to Review In-Person Teaching & Learning Plans

The Evergreen School District Board of Trustees will be holding a Study Session (Special Board Meeting) at 4:30 p.m. on December 3, 2020 to review and discuss the district's teaching and learning plans for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. The Board will be receiving reports from district staff, and recommendations from the Superintendent's Teaching and Learning in Safe Environments Advisory Committee (TLSEAC) and its subcommittees regarding their review of county guidelines, the Hybrid Learning Model, and the Distance Learning Model.

"While we would absolutely love to have students back on campus as they were pre COVID-19, it is critical that we take a cautious approach and address all safety concerns before considering reopening schools in our district," said Dr. Emy Flores, Superintendent of the Evergreen School District. "Our Board of Trustees wants to conduct a thorough review of the data and information about the Learning Model choices so that they can make an informed and thoughtful decision about what is in the best interest and safety of students, teachers and staff," she continued.

Evergreen students began the 2020-21 school year in the Distance Learning Model, which involves the delivery of curriculum and instruction in a 100% distance education format, and uses online instruction, online class meetings, online exams, and online submission of projects and assignments. The Hybrid Learning Model involves smaller groups--roughly half of the schools' students--attending school in person at a time, and includes some independent and distance learning. This model would require students, teachers and staff to wear masks and remain socially distanced at all times while on campus, along with following county and state health and sanitation guidelines.

This Special Board Meeting - Board Study Session will be open to the public and will include a time for public comment. The agenda and background information for this Study Session will be posted on the Safe Together website by December 2nd. The Board of Trustees will take action on the Superintendent's recommendation for reopening schools at its December 11, 2020 regular board meeting at 6:30 p.m., which was rescheduled from December 10, 2020.
